Unable to agree on an Epic, Feature, or Story’s estimate?
Foremost, encourage team members to share perspective on why they estimated the way they did. Everyone learns from assumptions and alternative ways of looking at solving for needs/challenges.
Ask someone to share perspective why they voted a lower estimate. Ask someone to clarify why they voted higher. If the team verbalizes agreement with either the higher or lower estimates as a result, great – enter that estimate.
If the team is still unsure or in disagreement … when stuck on Team Estimating …
Take a couple passes thru, 1 sub dimension at a time, to see where the concern is and find reasonable alignment (total consensus not always possible; we’ll learn over time, together)
common relative estimate dimensions:
- How much effort?
- Complexity? discuss similar to scenarios and past learnings. ex Schema changes? Ref Arch changes?
- Uncertainty? Have we ever done something like this before?
- Dependencies (known, unknown) within our area, external to our Team, ext to our ValStr, Vendor related?
- Other dimensions the team thinks of
